In view of the fact that there is currently no single-engine sweeper that meets Euro 6 emission standards, Hüttemann has initiated cooperation with Bucher Municipal and Daimler. The first pilot project for the assembly of a Bucher body, a Mercedes ATEGO 1524K chassis meeting the Euro 6 emission standards and an AMT gearbox ended in failure due to the gearbox. Tests related to this project have demonstrated that solutions using AMT gearboxes do not provide a satisfactory balance between very low sweep speeds and shift quality. In order to solve this problem, Allison was invited to participate in the project. Subsequently, the project team replaced the standard ATEGO transmission with the Allison 3500 automatic transmission.

Thanks to Allison's patented torque converter, the PTO device integrated with the transmission housing, and the flexibility of its advanced electronic control system, the second pilot project was a success. . The PTO device can be easily and efficiently connected to the cleaning device, making it possible to eliminate one of the internal combustion engines and its complex exhaust system. Therefore, the noise and exhaust emissions of the sweeper are also reduced accordingly, and the possibility of increasing the payload is also obtained.

One of the major technical challenges faced in the implementation of the project is the matching connection between the body and the gearbox in order to achieve the desired shift quality under all operating conditions from sweeping to long-distance driving. It is particularly noteworthy that with the wider speed range and higher speed ratio at first gear, the Allison 3500 transmission ensures excellent low-speed performance, which is critical for sweepers.

The original intention of the project was to liberate the driver of Hullner from the burden of continuous manual shifting. The Allison automatic transmission not only highlighted this feature, but also brought other operational advantages.

Hüttemann said that heavy shifting operations and repeated pedaling of the clutch pedal can cause premature strain on the shoulder or hip joints. The use of fully automatic gearboxes can prevent this health problem from occurring.

In addition, instead of using conventional dry clutches, Allison Transmission uses a hydraulic torque converter to increase the engine torque at the start of the vehicle, which can significantly improve vehicle performance during frequent start-stop operations. The Bucher sweeper, which was officially launched at the IFAT 2016, is equipped with the OM 936 engine, which delivers 238 hp (175 kW) of peak power at 2200 rpm and 1000 N.m of peak torque at 1,200 to 1600 rpm. With a wheelbase of only 3,560mm, this sweeper is extremely manoeuvrable and offers significant advantages for city street cleaning. In addition, the wheelbase of the second generation series, which is now available, is as short as only 3,360mm, which results in better handling for cleaning operations.

From a financial point of view, the purchase of large single-engine sweepers equipped with Allison transmissions is more economical because it is much cheaper than buying similar vehicles equipped with hydraulic systems. And its maintenance costs are lower than those of manual or AMT models.
